Transportation
The unit consists of two teams, one with a focus on alleged illegal operations and the other the existing regulated carrier base. Both teams perform vehicle and driver inspections, conduct record audits and conduct investigations which result in enforcement actions when appropriate.
The unit is responsible for the enforcement of PUC rules and the provisions of Title 40 pertinent to the regulation of the transportation industry, primarily Article 10.1.
The actions of the unit's investigators are driven by the goal of enhancing motor carrier safety through effective communication and enforcement. The Commission's motor carrier safety rules incorporate many of the federal regulations published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These rules are intended to enhance safe operations and our primary focus within these rules is on driver qualifications, hours of service; vehicle safety, maintenance and repair; commercial driver's licenses; alcohol and drug testing; and accident recordkeeping.
A helpful summary
of the federal regulations is published on the FMCSA's website.
