Board of Nursing

Renewal Information

If you have a Certified Nurse Aide Certification with an expiration date of January 31, 2008, you may now renew your license online.

General Information

Address changes. Renewal notices are mailed to the last address you provided to the Board approximately six weeks before the license expiration date. Remember: it is your responsiblity to notify the Division of any address changes.

Renewing online. If your license is currently in a renewal period, you will be able to renew online through Registrations Online Services. Renewing online allows you to get instant payment confirmation and speeds processing time.

Renewing by mail. Fourteen (14) business days after mailing your renewal application and payment according to the instructions on the renewal notice, you may check your license status via the Automated Licensure Information Online (ALISON) or Registrations Online Services. If your license does not yet show a new expiration date, do not assume your renewal application has been lost. With the automated bank depository system, many things could result in a delay. Please note the date you submit your completed renewal application and if after 4 weeks you have not received your license, please call (303) 894-7800. Automatically sending a duplicate renewal without first checking with our office could result in both applications being delayed and or rejected by the bank depository.

Retired/Volunteer status. If you are a registered nurse or a practical nurse AND meet all the qualifications, you may use the renewal period to change your license status from "Active" to "Retired/Volunteer" status. You must attest that you will NOT work as a nurse for pay if you request the Retired/Volunteer status. To determine whether you qualify for this status, please review the restrictions and qualifications.

60-day Grace Period for Late Renewals

RNs, LPNs, LPTs, and CNAs may renew their licenses up until sixty days after the license expiration date without the Board imposing a disciplinary sanction for practicing on a lapsed or expired license.
However, it is strongly encouraged that licensees renew their licenses before the expiration date for the following reasons:

  • Other government agencies, as well as employers, may have rules or policies prohibiting licensees from continuing to work during this grace period.
  • Licensees who do not renew their licenses by the expiration date must pay a $15 delinquency fee in addition to the renewal fee.
  • At the end of the grace period, licensees who did not renew must apply for reinstatement in order to activate their licenses.
  • Disciplinary action may be imposed on those licensees seeking reinstatement after the grace period who have practiced in Colorado on lapsed or expired licenses.
