Changes to the Medical Practice Act

During the 2010 legislative session, HB10-1260 was passed, continuing the Medical Board and making changes to the medical practice act.  Visit this document for more information. Elimination of the Olympic Training Center Temporary License

House Bill 10-1128 repealed the requirement for out-of-state physicians to obtain a temporary license to practice medicine at the United State Olympic Training Center located in Colorado Springs, CO.  Please contact the United States Olympic Training Center to inquire about their volunteer application process.  Information can be found by visiting their website at www.teamusa.org/medical/volunteers or calling (719) 866-4612.


ALERT--Medical License Renewal Scam

It has come to our attention that Colorado physicians are  again  receiving a notification from an entity representing themselves as "Colorado Physician Certification Services" or "Colorado Registration Service" with an address in Sacramento, California.  Please be advised that this notification is a scam.  This entity does not represent the Colorado Medical Board .   Colorado physician licenses are not currently being renewed and this notification should be disregarded.  Please do not send any money to this entity!

The State Board of Nursing and the Colorado Medical Board (“Board”) will be implementing new complementary rules for Advanced Practice Nurses with Prescriptive Authority.  These new rules were enacted as part of Senate Bill 09-239 and become effective July 1, 2010.  The new requirements will affect currently licensed Advanced Practice Nurses with Prescriptive Authority as well as new applicants for Prescriptive Authority. IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PHYSICIANS AND PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS:

The Colorado Medical Board (Board) would like to announce that effective May 1, 2010, license verifications for physicians and physician assistants will be outsourced to VeriDoc, a national physician licensure verification service. The Board will be joining 26 state medical boards who currently utilize VeriDoc’s services. A verification of your Colorado medical license can be sent from VeriDoc to any medical or osteopathic licensing board in the U.S.  This new service will allow your verifications to be expedited and electronically submitted to other state boards, in a matter of days.  Please visit VeriDoc’s website at http://veridoc.org for an overview of their services, fees and additional information.


Medical Board has Fully Implemented Medical Transparency Act

The Colorado Medical Board (“the Board”) has implemented the requirements of the Michael Skolnik Medical Transparency Act (“the Act”), which was enacted into law by the Colorado General Assembly in 2007. The Act requires all physicians who hold an active Colorado Medical license to disclose specific information that can be accessed by the public. Physicians who hold a Physician Training, Foreign Training Physician or Shriners Hospital license are exempt from these requirements. Visit this web page for more information.

Electronic Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

The Electronic Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (“PDMP”) is available online to all Colorado licensed prescribers of controlled substances and to pharmacists.

The PDMP, operated by the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy,  is a secure online database of controlled substance prescriptions that have been dispensed by Colorado registered pharmacies.   The PDMP provides immediate access to a patient's history of controlled substance prescriptions and is available 24/7. This objective information can then be used to assist prescribers and pharmacists in providing the appropriate treatment for their patients.  The PDMP also allows prescribers to obtain a complete record of the prescriptions that have been dispensed pursuant to his or her DEA registration.

X-Ray Certification

the Colorado Medical Board has revised Board Rule 700, which governs the education and training standards for unlicensed personnel exposing ionizing radiation. This would include:
  • Limited Scope Operators
  • Bone Densitometry Equipment Operators
  • X-Ray Machine Operators
  • Tomography Operators
  • Mammography Machine Operators

Persons not possessing a medical license who operate machine sources of ionizing radiation or who administer such radiation to patients will now be regulated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
