Board of Medical Examiners

Primary Source Verification

The Colorado Medical Board primary-source verifies the medical education and training of all physicians who obtain a Colorado medical license.

The information provided on this website and on the Automated License Information System Online (ALISON) is accurate to the best of our ability. To verify the timeliness of the information, the date the information was last updated is displayed in the lower left corner of each web page. The information on ALISON is "real-time." This means it is retrieved directly from the Division of Registrations licensing database at the time a license inquiry is made.

The following are the basic items that are verified before a physician is licensed to practice medicine in Colorado.

  • Date of birth (applicant must be over 21 years of age) is verified by a copy of the birth certificate or passport.

  • A Board approved medical school is verified by a certified verification from the school.

  • Internship/residency approved by the Accredited Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) - 1 year minimum for American graduates and 3 years minimum for international medical graduates - is verified by a certified document from that institution.

  • A Board approved medical licensing examination (LMCC, FLEX, NB, USMLE, state Board exam). Scores are sent directly to this office from the examining agency.

  • All states in which an applicant may have an active, lapsed (or expired), educational or temporary license or permit must send verification directly to the Colorado Board (for purposes of licensure status, the terms "lapsed" and "expired" have the same meaning).

  • The last five years of work history is verified by original letters sent directly to this office.

  • Doctors must provide proof of malpractice insurance as required by Colorado law or claim a specific exemption.

  • The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) data bank is queried for any state board actions.

  • The National Practitioners Data Bank / Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank (NPDB-HIPDB) are queried for any actions.

  • A doctor who has graduated from an international medical school is required to verify passage of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) exam, provide information about the medical school attended, and verify 3 years of ACGME/AOA approved postgraduate training.

The Board may request more information before granting a license.
