Exam Information

Architect Registration Examination || Engineer and Land Surveyor Exams

Architect Registration Examination

The Architect Registration Examination (ARE) assesses candidates for their knowledge, skills, and ability to provide the various services required in the practice of architecture. The ARE is the only examination prepared by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and has been adopted for use by all 55 U.S. member boards and the Canadian provincial architectural associations as the registration examination required of all candidates for architectural registration. For the most current information about the ARE, go to that section at www.ncarb.org.

If you require examination administration accommodations that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, please fill out the form for such requests.

"Rolling Clock" Instituted

During the 2004 NCARB Annual Meeting and Conference, a majority of NCARB member boards approved the establishment of a "rolling clock" for ARE candidates. A five-year rolling clock was implemented January 1, 2006.

Why was a rolling clock instituted for the ARE?

After two years of study, NCARB's Procedures & Documents Committee decided to require that all divisions of the ARE be passed in a reasonable amount of time. Committee members reviewed the historical changes to the exam, the requirements of those Member Boards that currently have rolling clock provisions, similar requirements in other professions, and related content validity information provided by the Chauncey Group, and ultimately determined that a five-year eligibility period was most appropriate for this new national standard.

Applications are retained by the Board for a period of two years commencing with the original date of Board approval. If you do not take your exam within that two-year period, your application and supporting documents will be purged from the Board files. It is then necessary that you apply with a new application and fees. However, each time you take and fail an exam your application is automatically renewed for another two years.

April exams are offered in Denver and Durango. October exams are offered in Denver and Grand Junction.
