Changes to Midwives Statute that Affect Pharmacy

Senate Bill 11-088, which was signed into law in 2011, created two authorities for direct-entry midwives giving the registrants the ability to obtain and administer certain medications and intravenous fluids. The licensees can opt to have one or the other of the authorities or both.

Registrants with the medication authority, which is designated as "MWA" on their license card, can obtain and administer only the following drugs:

  1. Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone, phytonadione);
  2. Rho D immune globulin;
  3. Oxytocin (Pitocin);
  4. Methylergonovine (Methergine);
  5. Misoprostol (Cytotec);
  6. and Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment.

Registrants with the authority to obtain and administer certain intravenous fluids are designated by "MIV" on their license card. These individuals can obtain and administer only the following intravenous fluids:

  1. 0.9% sodium chloride in sterile water; and
  2. Lactated Ringer's solution (LR).

Please be aware that a direct-entry midwife may have one, both, or none of these authorities. Please verify the midwife's license care prior to distributing any of the above-listed drugs to ensure the individual has the proper authority. This information is also available on DORA's Automated Licensure Information System Online ("ALISON") which may be found at https://www.doradls.state.co.us/alison.php.
