Intralata Toll Competition

On February 8, 1999, the intraLATA toll market was opened to competition. Before February 8, US West was the only provider of intraLATA toll service for most Colorado residents. Since 1999, many additional companies have begun to provide this service. Rates have decreased substantially, but choosing an intraLATA toll service provider is no longer as simple as calling one company and asking for their best rates.

The Colorado Office of Consumer Counsel has prepared this intraLATA toll rate comparison to help consumers choose the carrier, and the calling plan, that best suits their calling patterns.

The OCC's latest long-distance rate comparison shows Pioneer Telephone's Rate Buster plan to be the best all-around deal at 2.7 cents per minute for state-to-state calls, 6.5 cents a minute in-state, and no monthly fee or minimum. However, if all of your calls are state-to-state, Total Call's Total Saver plan, with its 2.9 cent or 3.9 cent plans and no monthly fee or minimum, is the best choice.

As noted on the Long-Distance Rate Comparison chart regarding the per-minute rates, fees and billing increments, rates and calling plans are subject to change and it is recommended that you contact the company for current rates and calling plans. Some companies have additional plans with cheaper rates if you sign up for service through the Internet, pay your monthly bills by credit card or both. Additionally, the billing increment is the time customers are billed for fractions of a minute during a call; therefore, the smaller the increment the greater the value to the customer.

If you are paying basic rates, call your long-distance provider and ask to be switched to a discount or bargain rate plan, or use our rate comparison to switch to another company.
