LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

RESIDENTIAL WIREMAN
Applicants for a Colorado residential wireman's license are required to provide verification of four thousand hours earned in no less than two years of electrical construction wiring experience, for lights, heat, and power.

JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN
Applicants for a Colorado journeyman electrician's license are required to provide verification of eight thousand hours earned in no less than four years of electrical construction wiring experience, for lights, heat, and power; with a minimum of four thousand hours earned in no less than two years of that time being commercial and/or industrial work. Verification of experience must state the hours and months of the time spent performing residential and commercial/industrial wiring.

MASTER ELECTRICIAN
Applicants for a Colorado master electrician's license are required to provide verification of at least two thousand hours earned in no less than one year of planning, laying-out, and supervising the installation of wiring, apparatus, and equipment for electrical light, heat, and power beyond the experience requirements for the journeyman's license unless you are applying under
§12-23-106, C.R.S. or §12-23-109, C.R.S.

VERIFICATION OF EXPERIENCE FORM
In July 2005, the Colorado State Electrical Board began accepting the Affidavit of Experience Form instead of work verification letters on company letterhead.
After December 31, 2005, you must use this form to verify work experience. No other format will be accepted by the Board.

EXAM INFORMATION

The electrical licensing examination is now being administered by a private testing agency, Pearsonvue. Once the application has been approved by the State Electrical Board, a letter of acceptance and information on how to contact Pearsonvue to obtain a candidate handbook will be mailed. The handbook will provide information on who to contact, how to schedule for the written examination, the testing locations, and the required fee, and other pertinent information.

NOTE: Positive photo identification must be presented at the time of admission to the electrical examination.

TEMPORARY PERMITS

If a temporary work permit is required, a request should be made at the same time the original application is submitted. Only one temporary work permit can be issued. A work permit will be issued for a 30-day period only. If, after the expiration of the permit, the applicant has failed to qualify for licensure, such applicant shall cease and desist from working as a master, journeyman, or residential wireman in the state of Colorado. If the applicant is not currently licensed in another category, such applicant must register as an apprentice and work with supervision.

APPRENTICE REGISTRATION

Upon employing an electrical apprentice to perform electrical work, the electirical contractor shall register such apprentice with the Board. Such apprentice shall be under the supervision of a licensed electrician when performing any electrical work.
